Italy and fashion go together. So do athletes and high- performance gear.
What does that mean for team uniforms at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy?
It means sleeker and more subtle styles than the fleece pieces that dominated the U.S. team wardrobe at the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City.
Roots, the company making many of the outfits, calls the overall look "retro futurism."
The uniforms aim to blend high-technology fabrics while using the uniforms of the 1956 Games in Cortina, Italy, as inspiration, explains Roots co-founder Michael Budman.
The outfits for the opening and closing parades include an Alpine-style knit navy sweater with a nylon front panel in white with swaths of two lighter shades of blue and a small Olympic logo patch on one side. The zipper trim is red.
"White is very popular in Italy and the U.S. wore it in '56," Budman says. (For the U.S., the 1956 Olympics were most notable because it was the first time it dominated the figure skating.)
The parade pant is nylon and the style is supposed to be a mix of a formal dress style and a snowboard pant.
Kelly Rae, fashion and grooming director at Stuff magazine, says snowboarders are among the most fickle when it comes to fashion.
"Once they're in the circuit, they're chasing snow around the world - in Europe, in Japan.

Phoebe Philo has resigned as head designer for fashion house Chloé because she wants to spend more time with her family, the company said on Thursday.
Philo, who was crowned British designer of the year in 2004, became Chloé's creative director in 2001, taking over from fellow Briton Stella McCartney.
"My decision to resign is for personal reasons, including especially to spend more time with my new baby in the coming months," Philo said in a statement.
"These past years have been an exciting period for all of us, and I wish the company all the best success in the future."
Philo, born in 1973, returned for the summer ready-to-wear show last October after a season's maternity leave following the birth of her daughter in December 2004.
Chloé, which is part of Swiss luxury good maker Richemont, says Philo brought a new sassy edge to the label.
"We thank Phoebe for her contribution of the continuing growth of the company," said Ralph Toledano, chairman of Chloé.
"Our design team has successfully worked independently on previous collections and I totally trust their creative ability to produce the upcoming Chloé collection," he said.
The company did not say who would succeed Philo.

Each designer received a grant of $25,000 to showcase a collection during February 2006 fashion week.
Every year, Ecco Domani wines selects six emerging designers and gives them a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to show their designs.

"To select only six winners from such a talented group was a major challenge, but the designers chosen were a cut above the rest."
Brian Reyes focuses on creating wearable, versatile pieces that would appeal to mother and daughter alike.
Reyes believes there is room in a young woman's closet for elegant American wear.
Hanuk is inspired by his personal cultural diversity, cultivated at an early age when his family moved from Korea to the United States.
His designs are both artisan-like and functional in feeling.
Rodarte is the design team of sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, who create garment
