Paris Fashion Week: Cut Out the ConventionalThe Paris prêt-à-porter week that ended yesterday was the season of the shape-shifters and the scissor wizards; designers such as Stefano Pilati at Yves Saint Laurent, John Galliano, Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton and Nicolas Ghesquière at Balenciaga who cut, sliced and carved with surgical precision as they created new silhouettes for autumn/winter 2008/09.
Themes or exotic inspirations were incidental and, if mentioned at all, were certainly secondary to evolving the shape of things to come.
The secret lay in the ability to start from scratch and conceive the pattern that would be the template for the new silhouette.
