Designer's DreamsRobin Verhage-Abrams gets to dream up costumes, shop for textiles on someone else's budget, and then give the fabrics to professionals for the hard work of drafting patterns, cutting, sewing and fitting.
It's a job any lover of textiles would envy.
"I learned to sew as a 4-H Club member in elementary school," said Verhage-Abrams, a freelance costume designer. "I've always loved fabrics."
She designs costumes for one or two productions a year, many of them for Opera Theatre of St. Louis. She designed six to eight productions a year before accepting a full-time job six years ago teaching fashion illustration and related topics at Washington University, where she's an associate professor of art.
Her most recent project was "Dream of the Pacific," a one-act opera based on the Lewis and Clark expedition. The opera premiered in February at the Art Museum, and it will be performed twice next week as part of Opera Theatre's regular season.
