Clare Phillips: Shaping Up for a Career in Fashion DesignOkato College Year 13 student Clare Phillips has been selected to represent her school in the 2004 Bernina Secondary Schools Fashion Awards.
She will be up against 40 other entrants from schools all over New Zealand in the Excellence in Sewing Techniques and Processes category.
"The judging is based on the way it's all put together, not just the design," she said.
The winners are announced on November 8.
The 18-year-old entered the awards last year with the help of her teacher, but this year she is going it alone.
Her entry is based around a shirt she designed and made earlier in the year, and has been altered for this competition. "I made the pattern myself and it's kind of formal. It's a boned bodice which is then attached to a blouse," she said. "I'm also making a black, pin-tucked skirt with a bit of a flare to go with it."
So far, Clare has spent more than 15 hours making the shirt and is putting in more time on the skirt.
"It's taken a while, but I think it will only take a few more hours to get it all done," she said.
With the school year coming to an end, Clare already has her sights firmly set on the future.
"I'm entering the Spotlight ball-gown competition as well as the Taranaki Fashion Arts competition, and I've already been accepted into WITT for next year," she said.
