Anatomy of a Classic The Trench

Anatomy of a Classic: The Trench

It started as a purely practical weatherproof overcoat. But over the course of a century, the trench has outlasted every trend and won over every new generation.

In 1914, when Sir Ernest Shackleton launched his expedition to cross the Antarctic, "cutting-edge technology" meant reindeer-fur boots and wool underwear. But thanks to outerwear pioneer Thomas Burberry, Shackleton and his crew were kitted out with waterproof coveralls that helped fend off ice, sleet and frostbite.

Here, an interactive look at the pedigree of a fashion icon through the years 1914 - 2004.
