The British Fashion Awards 2004

The British Fashion Awards 2004

Phoebe Philo was named Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards last night.

The 31 year old designer, who is expecting her first baby later on this year and is credited with increasing sales at Chloe by a massive 40 per cent since last season, picked up the gong from Bryan Ferry, leaving fellow nominees Roland Mouret and Christopher Bailey by the wayside.

Other winners at the event, which took place in the Raphael Gallery at the Victoria & Albert Museum, included Best Menswear Designer Alexander McQueen, Best Accessories Designer Mulberry and Best Model Lily Cole.

Giles Deacon beat two other hot choices, Alice Temperley and Jonathan Saunders, to take home the Best New Designer gong for his two-season-old label, Giles.

The Fashion Creator award was won by make-up guru Pat McGrath, who was responsible for the Leigh Bowery mask looks that John Galliano's models took on last season, while David Bailey took home the V&A's own award for Outstanding Achievement in Fashion.

The Net-a-porter team, which is no stranger to winning prizes these days, was partying again last night too, after being named Best Shop over fellow contenders Asprey and Matthew Williamson.
