Retail Entrepreneur Wins School Sponsorship AwardPhilip Green, the boss of high street fashion retail group Arcadia, has been named sponsor of the year by the Specialist Schools Trust.
Mr Green has contributed a total of £1.25m to 50 schools in England specialising in business and enterprise, said the trust. He is due to receive a commendation this evening from Ruth Kelly, the education secretary, who is giving a lecture on education priorities for the next five years.
Mr Green owns the British Home Stores (Bhs) chain and Arcadia, Britain's biggest privately owned retail chain which includes the brands TopShop, TopMan, Burton, Dorothy Perkins, Evans, Outfit, Miss Selfridge and Wallis and operates 2,000 stores nationwide.
He has twice failed to buy the Marks & Spencer chain after his £9.1bn bid fell through last year.
He initially agreed to sponsor a school through his British Home Stores company and in addition to sponsoring specialist schools, he has also embarked on a major initiative, in conjunction with the government and London College of Fashion, to set up a fashion retail academy.
Mr Green said: "I am delighted to be involved in supporting the transformation of secondary education in this country by sponsoring specialist schools."
