 Textile industry rage: 'Made in China'The battered textile industry threw down the gauntlet Wednesday in its clash with China, calling on U.S. authorities to prevent the Asian giant from crushing both U.S. manufacturers and offshore apparel producers.
"The U.S. government's lack of follow-through on its commitments concerning textile trade policy has thrown the U.S. textile, fiber and apparel industry -- and its nearly one million workers -- into a life-or-death struggle," Billy Moore, chairman of the American Textile Manufacturers Institute, said in a statement.
The call to arms from top industry executives, in Washington, D.C., for a meeting, marked a new tack for textile and fiber firms over the free-trade issue, as six organizations pledged an intense lobbying campaign, a break with mixed support for the Bush administration's free-trade policies.
