Speedo to Outfit U.S. Sledding TeamSpeedo has taken its Fastskin technology for swimwear and extended it to sledding sports with its unveiling of the Fastskin FSII Ice speed suit that will be worn by the U.S. sledding team at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy, Feb. 10-26.
It marks the first time athletes will compete in Speedo at a Winter Olympics.
Speedo said the Fastskin FSII Ice is specially designed to met the needs of athletes in skeleton, bobsled and luge events.
It brings together the aerodynamic features of the Fastskin FSII with the biomechanical engineering needed to provide the tight 'second skin' fit and freedom of motion required for these winter sports, Speedo said.
The Fastskin fabric, first created to reduce friction drag for swimmers and scientifically based on sharkskin, has been modified on the Fastskin FSII Ice so as to reduce drag based on the airflow direction unique to the three sledding sports.
The design also works to reduce energy dissipation, allowing the athlete's body to recover more quickly during competition and after.
A team of U.S. Olympic hopefuls led by Olympic Gold Medalist bobsledder Vonetta Flowers, world-ranked skeleton competitors Chris Soule and Noelle Pikus-Pace, and bobsledders Todd Hays and Jean Prahm assisted in the development and design of the suit.
