Rio Fashion Week Opens with Santa EphigeniaThe Rio grande dames showed up en masse for the debut women's show in Rio Fashion by Santa Ephigenia, a snazzy and sleek collection that would not have looked out of place in the Carrousel du Louvre or the Fiera di Milano.
Pre-show, the runway at this exotic city's Modern Art Museum, where all but three of the shows are staged, was packed with local hacks, gossip and TV crews nabbing quotes from local social movers and shakers like Beth Pinto Guimaraes and the leggy black TV anchor Maria Gloria.
Santa Ephigenia's design duo Marco Maia and Luciano Canale claimed no particular inspiration for this Fall Winter 2006 collection, but the impression of a longing for idyllic era of old pre-war Rio was evident that and the memory of seeing elegant women in their youth.
They opened with panache, sending out Caroline Trentini in striking black cable knot mini dress bedecked in a score of black metallic chains.
Maia and Canale know how to keep things simple, and thus avoid the biggest weakness of Brazilian designers - over elaboration.
The pair are also smart colorists - they picked the right hues of dusky gold, faded beige and a wonderful Roman Imperial purple that appeared on suede Fifties wide belts, laser cut top coats in cashmere mixes and a rather brilliant micro bolero knit jacket.
