Following the success of the recent global student design competition, the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) is now launching the search for undergraduate talent in fashion and textile design.
Entries will be invited for the SDC Colour Design Award 2009 from students following a recognised fashion/textile undergraduate course, with regional heats to be held around the world early next year.
The competition is open to entries from the following countries: Australia, Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Each SDC region/affiliate around the globe, together with the AATCC in the United States, will organise its own competition based on a universal brief.
Each country finalist will then be invited to go forward to the grand final which will be held in Goa, India in June 2009.
The grand final will coincide with the SDC international conference on 25-26 June in India and, to tie with the theme of the conference, the brief also incorporates an aspect of sustainable thinking within the original design and/or final design application.
The main criteria for entries, as previously, will be to demonstrate the creative, imaginative and original use of colour in either fashion or textiles.

The design duo known as Viktor & Rolf decided to save some money and be low-key this season by holding a runway show without guests.
Instead, Dutch designers Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren filmed their Spring 2009 runway show last week with supermodel Shalom Harlow, who wore each look, including three dresses laden with Swarovski crystals that weigh 20 kilos, according to a publicist.
I tried lifting one of them and would have needed help to get it off the ground.
Viktor & Rolf are known for their theatrical shows - which have included having each model carry her own lighting and music system, and trench coats with 3-D words like "WOW" popping out of them.

Toyota has collaborated with a team of Chicago-based fashion designers for the world premiere of clothing inspired by one of the company's concept personal mobility vehicles.
Spurred by the futuristic Toyota i-Real, this first-of-its-kind alliance of automotive engineering and fashion will take center stage at the internationally- renowned Fashion Focus Chicago 2008, in Millennium Park, the evening of Thursday, October 2.
Chicago-residing designers Agga B. Raya, Anna Fong, Melissa Serpico and Lidia Wachowska were chosen from a large talent pool of interested designers to create fashions derived from the Toyota i-Real concept.
Introduced to the world at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, the completely-electric Toyota i-Real was created closely to human scale as a step toward further development in the future.
The one-person vehicle has three wheels -- two at the front and one at the back.
When operating in low-speed mode, its shortened wheelbase allows it to maneuver at eye-level naturally among pedestrians, without taking up large amounts of space.
In high-speed mode, the wheelbase lengthens to provide a lower center of gravity and better driving performance.
Shortly after their selection in May, the four young designers were flown to Japan to interact with the Toyota i-REAL and its engineering team.
While overseas, the quartet gained creative inspiration by being immersed in the Japanese culture.

Eco-fashion is not just a cool concept but is proving a useful economic tool for Japan's textile manufacturers.
Environmentally- friendly new products from recycled cotton to organically-dyed cashmere and a revolutionary treatment to make wool shrink-resistant without using chemicals were among the innovations showcased at a trade fair in Paris to woo the fashion capital's top designers.
"These are the survivors. The low quality textile manufacturers have all disappeared because they could not compete with China on price," explained Seiko Fujii-Lesage at the J-Tex salon.
"They have identified the emerging eco-friendly market as one way of staying ahead of the game," she said.
