Milan Revives the Swinging Sixties with a Stroll Down Carnaby StreetCarnaby Street is being re-born on the catwalks of Milan Fashion Week.
Mini skirts, Chelsea boots, platform shoes and psychedelic prints are the order of the day as Milanese designers embrace the once-famed Swinging London of the 1960s.
Forty years after Mary Quant fired the first broadside in the hemlines war, the thigh-high skirt is re-emerging as the look for spring/summer 2007.
With long hair ironed flat or caught in simple ponytails, the models are striding out on the catwalks, long greyhound legs flashing under thigh-high hemlines as a 21st century reincarnation of the King's Road "dolly birds" who once helped make London the world headquarters of the Sixties youthquake.
The Gucci designer Frida Giannini placed the powerful status brand firmly behind the mini revival with her spring/summer 2007 collection last night.
The Twiggy-style A-line dress, stopping short a few inches south of the derriere, was the key shape.
