The Art of DesignSelections from the SFMOMA Collection
Featuring some 100 objects of architectural, graphic, and industrial design, this survey ranges from well-known classics to works by up-and-coming designers, highlighting areas such as experimental architecture and digital design.
Of particular note in the current installation is a selection of film posters from the famed "Polish Poster School."
Impressive, original, and uncompromising in execution, the designs in this presentation reflect the experimental spirit of the Polish artists who, beginning in 1946, began working on government commission to create artworks advertising films.
Their posters were not only innovative, but also technically superior, visually more interesting, and intellectually more challenging than those of any other nation.
With expressive impact and an often-disconcertin g point of view, these posters catch the eye, offering a concise and often ingenious summary of each film. On view through March 6, 2005.
