What role should foolishness play in the creative process? How do we come up with the next big idea and push our creative boundaries?

Over the years, we've learned that some of our most interesting work has been inspired by a little tomfoolery on smaller-scale projects from years before.

In November, find out why we believe a little irreverent experimentation is essential to keeping our designer minds fresh - even though we may occasionally end up making fools of ourselves in the process.

Templin Brink Design (T.B.D.) creates highly original and effective branding, packaging, corporate identity, retail and advertising campaigns designed to increase market share and build brand recognition.

T.B. D. combines the unique talents of its principals, Joel Templin and Gaby Brink. Joel is the down-to-earth Midwesterner with a taste for humor and Wisconsin cheddar. Gaby is the Swiss-born perfectionist with a photographer's eye and a preference for Gruyere. They met in the 90s at Foote, Cone and Belding and left in 1998 to form their own firm.

Since opening their doors as Templin Brink Design in 1998, T.B. D. has created comprehensive branding and advertising campaigns for top global marketers including Dockers and Levi Strauss & Co., Target, American Eagle Outfitters, Robe...

Clear Rx From Masters Thesis to Medicine Cabinet

Clear Rx: From Master's Thesis to Medicine Cabinet

School of Visual Arts presents "ClearRx: From Master's Thesis to Medicine Cabinet" - an exhibition that follows the three-year journey from Deborah Adler's initial concept to redesign the prescription bottle and label, to the partnership with Target and the launch of ClearRxSM in May of 2005.

The exhibition, sponsored by Target, will give a comprehensive look at the design evolution of an object that takes on such a crucial role in our everyday lives.

The exhibition will be on view from October 29 through November 23 at the Westside Gallery, 141 West 21st Street, New York City.

Adler first had the idea to redesign the standard amber-colored prescription bottle when her grandmother accidentally swallowed pills meant for Deborah's grandfather.

Adler quickly came to the conclusion that the prescription bottle was not just unattractive - it was actually dangerous.

Motivated by a desire to make people's lives easier and safer, in 2002 she designed a comprehensive system for packaging prescription medicine as her Master's thesis.

"I wanted to design the bottle so that when you open up your medicine cabinet, you instantly know which is your drug, what the name of the drug is, and how to take it," says Adler.

The results are a redesigned prescription and communication system that includes: the redesigned bottle, ea

2006 Digital Canvas Awards: First Worldwide Adobe Photoshop Competition

Today, at the PhotoPlus Expo in New York City, the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP) announced a "Call for Entries" for its 2006 Digital Canvas Awards, the first worldwide competition exclusively for Adobe Photoshop users.

"Finally, Photoshop artists, photographers, and designers from around the world will have an opportunity to gain international recognition, celebrate their very best work, and share their vision and creativity with the worldwide Photoshop community," said Scott Kelby, president of NAPP and best-selling author of computer and technology books worldwide.

"This will be a groundbreaking competition on so many levels, and will open a lot of doors for some of these amazingly talented artists," Kelby added.

Winners will be chosen in 11 categories, and the Best of Show Grand Prize winner will be sent by Photoshop User magazine on a dream assignment to Paris, France.

Photoshop User is providing roundtrip airfare, hotel accommodations, hotel transfers, and daily expenses for the winner, and an assistant of their choice, for this world-class assignment.

They'll be on assignment for five days, using the City of Lights as their inspiration as they design the artwork for a cover of Photoshop User magazine.

Apple Introduces Aperture: Post Production Tool for Photographers

Apple introduced Aperture, the first all-in-one post production tool that provides everything photographers need after the shoot.

Aperture offers an advanced and incredibly fast RAW workflow that makes working with a camera's RAW images as easy as JPEG.

Built from the ground up for pros, Aperture features powerful compare and select tools, nondestructive image processing, color managed printing and custom web and book publishing.

'Aperture is to professional photography what Final Cut Pro is to filmmaking,' said Rob Schoeben, Apple's vice president of Applications Marketing.

'Finally, an innovative post production tool that revolutionizes the pro photo workflow from compare and select to retouching to output.'

'Until now, RAW files have taken so long to work with,' said Heinz Kluetmeier, renowned sports photographer whose credits include over 100 Sports Illustrated covers.

'What amazed me about Aperture is that you can work directly with RAW files, you can loupe and stack them and it's almost instantaneous - I suspect that I'm going to stop shooting JPEGs. Aperture just blew me away.'

Unique compare and select tools in Aperture allow photographers to easily sift through massive photo projects and quickly identify their final selections.
