The Art Institutes and Americans for the Arts National Poster Design Contest

The Art Institutes and Americans for the Arts National Poster Design Contest

Twenty-five high school students from across the country interested in a graphic design career competed in the 2005 Poster Design Scholarship Competition, sponsored by The Art Institutes and Americans for the Arts.

Students created original poster artwork that expressed the slogan "Art is a Global Language," and wrote designer statements explaining their poster concept and why they want to enter the graphic design field.

This year's national first place winner is Adrian Patino, of Miami, Florida. Patino is a senior at Miami Coral Park Senior High School and plans to attend The Art Institutes' Miami International University of Art & Design to study graphic design.

"I have always wanted to study something that would satisfy me intellectually and economically. The idea of using my creativity, my imagination, and artistic skills to pursue a graphic design career has always fascinated me. I have strong motivation and a lot of determination to become a great designer." says Patino.

"We're pleased to be collaborating with Americans for the Arts because we believe, as educators, this is a critical time to support and strengthen the universal role that the arts play in our lives and in the world," says Dave Pauldine, President of The Art Institutes.

According to Robert L. Lynch, President and CEO of Americans for the Arts

Most Inspiring and Innovative Design Projects in Europe over the Past Two Years

Most Inspiring and Innovative Design Projects in Europe over the Past Two Years

Amsterdam Weekly, the city's free cultural paper, has been named by London's Design Museum as one of the "most inspiring and innovative design projects in Europe over the past two years."

The paper will appear in an exhibition called The European Design Show which opens on Friday, 28 May in the British capital. The museum is the world's leading museum of industrial design, fashion and architecture.

"Amsterdam Weekly is the perfect example of how a freely available newspaper can maintain incredibly high design standards -- every city should have one!" said Sophie McKinlay, curator of the Design Museum.

Besides Amsterdam Weekly, The European Design Show will showcase the Design Museum's selection of the most exciting developments in contemporary design, from fashion and furniture, to ingenious websites, innovative product design and ice cream packaging, and even a newly invented shade of black.

Amsterdam Weekly'S eye-catching design was created by art director Danny Calvi. He is assisted by a team of designers including Aquil Copier, Bas Morsch and Simon Wald-Lasowski. The paper regularly publishes the innovative work of local freelance photographers and illustrators, including the "Photo Notes" series by acclaimed photographer Hans Eijkelboom.

The exhibit runs from 28 May to 4 September 2005.

Innovative Packaging Holds Sway

Innovative Packaging Holds Sway

Packaging design is one of the most demanding and innovative fields in technology, often changing the very ways in which products are manufactured, preserved, marketed, distributed and used.

With more than $100 billion in gross sales, packaging is the third-largest industry in the nation.

Many types of merchandise have relied (at least partly) on their packaging technology for success in the marketplace.

One of the most influential packaging designs was that used for the crackers known as Uneeda Biscuits.

In the closing years of the 19th century, bakers produced crackers that were mixed together and sold from open barrels in local general stores.

As it became possible to distribute products more quickly to other regions, a group of bakers merged their operations to form National Baking Co. (later known as Nabisco).

This new company then distributed its own crackers (Uneeda Biscuits) nationwide, enclosed within a waxed paper wrapper inside sturdy cardboard boxes.

This simple but innovative packaging conveyed a powerful message to the public - that Uneeda Biscuits were not only fresh and of uniform consistency but more sanitary than crackers sold in bulk from barrels.

A higher benchmark for quality was established by the success of Uneeda Biscuits, and a new era in merchandising began as individually packa

Were a Weird Mob Designing a Cultural Identity

We're a Weird Mob : Designing a Cultural Identity

Curated by Elizabeth Gertsakis, the exhibition presents the work of the 1970s All-Australian Graffiti graphic design group, and the more recent flag design concepts behind Russell Kennedy's A Vision Unfurled.

It is being mounted with the support of Monash University and Australia Post.

All Australian Graffiti were urban, street wise and irreverent.

The illustrators and artists involved were Mimmo Cozzolino, (Co-editor of All Australian Symbols) Con Aslanis, Geoff Cook, Neil Curtis, Izi Mamur, Meg Williams and Tony Ward. Influenced by American cartoonist Robert Crumb, the graphics of Monty Python, and Fysh Rutherford's comic script The Iron Outlaw, they captured the regional and multicultural elements of the day and challenged the minimal international style that was current.

Russell Kennedy's A Vision Unfurled concerns itself with design ideas for a national flag of reconciliation.

In conjunction with the exhibition, there will be individual artists talks by Geoff Cook, Russell Kennedy, Mimmo Cozzolino, Neil Curtis, Constantine Aslanis and Izi Mamur.

Programming includes a one day Seminar for tertiary students and academics (3 August), an After hours Panel Forum of All Australian Graffiti for professional designers with AGDA and DIA (11 August) and a Panel Forum for Art, Design and Visual Communications Curri
