 The preference for Coke versus Pepsi is not only a matter for the tongue to decide, Samuel McClure and his colleagues have found. Brain scans of people tasting the soft drinks reveal that knowing which drink they're tasting affects their preference and activates memory-related brain regions that recall cultural influences. Thus, say the researchers, they have shown neurologically how a culturally based brand image influences a behavioral choice.
These choices are affected by perception, wrote the researchers, because "there are visual images and marketing messages that have insinuated themselves into the nervous systems of humans that consume the drinks."
Even though scientists have long believed that such cultural messages affect taste perception, there had been no direct neural probes to test the effect, wrote the researchers. Findings about the effects of such cultural information on the brain have important medical implications, they wrote.
"There is literally a growing crisis in obesity, type II diabetes, and all their sequelae that result directly from or are exacerbated by overconsumption of calories. It is now strongly suspected that one major culprit is sugared colas," they wrote.

 Wolfgang Weingart, one of the world's leading figures in the area of graphic design, will visit the Western Michigan University campus and give a free public lecture about his work at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, in Room 2304 of Sangren Hall.
Weingart has taught typography at the Basel School of Design in Switzerland since 1968. He has lectured and taught extensively in Europe, North and South America, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. His experimental work in typography has influenced the course of design history in the latter decades of the 20th century.

 Monigle Associates, the largest independent brand and design consultancy in the country, has been selected once again as winner of several American Graphic Design Awards. Now in its 25th year, the American Graphic Design Awards, sponsored by Graphic Design:usa, is among the most prestigious and competitive awards contests in the industry, as only twelve percent of entries received honors this year.
A nationwide panel of eight judges selected five of Monigle's logo designs for awards in communication and graphic design excellence. The American Hospital Association, First Mainstreet Financial, Winterthur Museum Night of Enchanted Lights, Floyd Medical Center, and Three Rivers Health were among the winners.
