 "Newspaper design is changing at a rate we haven't seen since the days of Hearst and Pulitzer," says noted designer Roger Black in the forward to a new collection of essays, "Contemporary Newspaper Design," edited by John D. Berry. As visuals become more important and stories get shorter, "we are seeing a new wave of newspaper design," Black says, pointing to designers such as Mario Garcia, Lucie Lacava, Simon Esterson and Ally Palmer.
Berry, a longtime design writer and editor, notes that newspaper designs cross the oceans more frequently these days, "partly because of the way the same consultants get hired to work on redesigns all over the world." In the pages that follow, various designers explain the history and evolution of newspaper production, from the days of metal type to today's digital page composition.
In one of the essays, Black details his design work at the Los Angeles Times, beginning in 1998, and recalls how his team's work was caught in the middle of the Staples Center fiasco. A new prototype, including a daily sports tab, had been approved for implementation but was stopped cold when it became public that the Times had a secret deal to share advertising revenues with the Staples Center.  The deadline for this year's Magazine Design Awards has been extended until Friday 30 July.
Now on their sixth year, the awards - sponsored by Media Week's sister-title, Press Gazette - recognise innovation and creativity in the fiercely competitive consumer, customer, business magazine and newspaper supplement markets.
Last year's overall winner was The Observer for its one-off Crime Uncovered supplement.
Other awards went to Marie Claire (consumer over 40,000 sales), Icon (B2B), Carlos (customer) and Arena (consumer under 40,000 sales).
The judging panel for this year's awards includes: Andy Cowles, creative director of IPC Media, Neil Robinson, publisher of the NME, Jeremy Leslie, creative director of John Brown Citrus Publishing, Mark Porter, art director of The Guardian, and Paul Kurzeja, group art director of Emap Performance.

 Wanted: Talented Newcomers for the Live Visuals Award from Motorola
Today it takes more than a DJ to meet the demands of a great party. In recent years a self-contained art style has been developing in the clubs and at festivals- a style that in terms of dynamism and creativity is on par with the skills of the DJ.
The mobile communications company Motorola, in co-operation with flora&faunavisions - agency for visual design and with the organisers of the ContactEurope Festival, announces the first competition in the field of club visuals: The Live Visuals Award from Motorola.
