If people complain that they can't read your handwriting, don't write them off. Instead, consider this local opportunity that could help improve your script: a week-long calligraphy conference and workshop at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
"Calligraphy today is entirely different than what it was up until about 1970," says Patricia Dresler, who is heading the 24th International Conference of Calligraphy and the Lettering Arts. The conference, which is hosted by the 30-member St. Louis Calligraphy Guild, begins on Saturday.
"Lettering is no longer just beautiful addresses on envelopes and nice lettering on simple certificates," she says. "Now, it includes pieces that can be hung on the wall as fine art."
During the conference, 49 workshops will be offered, including classes on "Word Pictures," "Classic Bindings" and "Zen Calligraphy and Paper Casting." The event is expected to draw more than 300 calligraphers and calligraphy enthusiasts from every continent except Antarctica, according to Dresler.
Charles Mullen, a St. Louis calligrapher who has attended several conferences, is especially looking forward to a presentation on the St. John's Bible project under way in a scriptorium in Wales.

DALLAS Rick Johnson & Company won a total of seven awards at Graphis' annual logo competition and Step's Design Review, the shop said.
The Albuquerque, N.M., agency picked up five awards at the Graphis logo competition last week, the shop said. The winning designs included those produced for Red Rock Balloon Rally, Giant Star, OilSlick Imports, the New Mexico Advertising Federation and the New Mexico Department of Transportation's Traffic Safety Bureau.
With the exception of the Giant Star logo, which was created by RJC senior art director Mike Penn, agency design director Tim McGrath produced all of the other graphics.
In addition, the shop recently won two awards at Step's annual Design Review. Ads for the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce's "Albuquerque Reads" campaign were recognized for logo and public service advertisement design, the agency said. RJC's McGrath, vice president and creative director Sam Maclay and illustrator Ted Slampyak created the two ads.
With only 200 pieces selected worldwide, RJC's winning entries will appear in annual worldwide publications issued by both Graphis and Step magazines.

Wether you design your business brochures, flyers, web page, or ads there are some things that you need to know. There are some basic graphic design principles that those of us trained in the commercial art/graphic design field don't always share. Here's a short list of elements of graphic design that you can use today.
Color
This is the first and most important. Color is everything. It's why we buy HDTV sets to get better color. You want to consider your product first. Is there a color that fits the item? Are you selling beach items, chose a sand color. Are you selling electronics, chose a metallic color. Next make sure the color is eye-catching but possible to look at. If you can't stare at the color for at least the minimum amount of time that you'd want your customer's attention, then don't use it.
Line
And I don't mean "a line" I mean the line of the elements in your project. Stand back and squint at your creation. Notice the line of the text and the images. Where are the lines moving? They should all direct your customer's attention from the top of your page to the bottom in a seamless movement. If you notice an out of place line the directs your eyes back to the top of the page or stops it all together then you need to rearrange a few items.

Entries to the competition must have been designed during 2000-2004 and can be submitted by design companies and individuals from around the world.
Designs may be submitted under the following categories: Trademark/Logo, Visual Identity Series, Spark Creation, Corporation Image Management, Promoting.
The judges of this year's competition include Dan Reisinger (Israel), Yu Bingnan (China), Lenz Anetter (France), David Carson (United States), Xie Jianjun (China).

Ten finalists, ages 6-11, are
vying for the cover of Twinkies 75th birthday box. The snack cake will turn 75
on April 6, 2005. Beginning today and running through August 31st, Twinkie
lovers of America can vote for their favorite box design at Twinkies web site.
Finalists were selected from more than 1,300 entries. The grand prize
winner receives a $40,000 college scholarship, second place receives a $20,000
scholarship and a $10,000 scholarship will be awarded to third place. The
remaining seven will each receive $1,000, and all the finalists will get a
Twinkie prize pack and a Giant bicycle.
The contest theme is "Twinkies Celebrates 75 Years of Fun."
