Black Pencil

Black Pencil

The Holy Grail of design and advertising - the much coveted D&AD Gold Award, known as the 'Black Pencil' - has been won by two design entries in this year's prestigious D&AD Awards. A series of Fruit & Veg stamps by johnson banks for the Royal Mail and the moving interactive installation Ship of Ideas created by Atelier Markgraph for a German tourist authority have gained the world's highest accolade from a team of expert judges.

The D&AD Awards hold a special kudos as they are not automatically awarded each year. Only on the rare occasion that a piece of work breaks the mould or sets a new standard of excellence in creativity is the 'Black Pencil' awarded and last year no D&AD Gold Award was given. Likewise, the D&AD Silver Awards, the 'Yellow Pencils' are awarded for the most innovative and creative work in advertising and design, some categories this year received only nominations or inclusions in the D&AD Annual.

There are 53 D&AD Silver Award winners this year. In addition to Cog the television advertisement for Honda UK by Wieden + Kennedy UK, winners include the Adidas commercial Kicking it starring Jonny Wilkinson and David Beckham for which The Quarry received an award for Television and Cinema Crafts. In Music Videos Shynola, The Oil Factory and Parlophone Records UK picked up an award for Blur's Good Song, DDB

Quarter Design Commission Will Meet Next Week

Quarter Design Commission Will Meet Next Week

State officials will begin sifting next week through hundreds of suggested designs for North Dakota's commemorative state quarter, Lt. Gov. Jack Dalrymple says.

Nearly 400 ideas were submitted before last week's deadline. Dalrymple is chairman of a nine-member commission that will submit five design ideas to the U.S. Mint, which will translate them into proposed coin images. The final design will be chosen from the five finalists.

"It seems like the more ideas you get, the less clear you are about what you want to do," Dalrymple said. "The difficulty, I think, is going to be in coming up with something that is truly unique to our state."

The commission is meeting Tuesday to consider the ideas, and decide on a procedure for reviewing them, Dalrymple said.

The panel will establish a subcommittee to take the five favorite concepts, and try to "condense them and polish them up, possibly improve them a bit, and try to make the best narrative proposals that we can come up with," he said.

Dalrymple hopes the work will be completed by the end of August.

The effort is part of a U.S. Mint program, which began in 1999, to make special quarters for the 50 states. Twenty-eight state quarters have been issued so far, most recently for Texas, whose quarter features an outline of the state, a single star and the "Lone Star St

Graphic Design in a Blind Market

Graphic Design in a Blind Market

A typographic collage of cut-out words by a student at the Lebanese American University (LAU) in many ways sums up the predicaments that graphic designers face: "The hardest thing to see is in front of your eyes."

These words refer to critical image analysis - a central aspect of the discipline of graphic design - and also to the challenges designers face regarding their role in society, job aspirations, unappreciative clients, and too many students graduating in the field.

The demand for professional graphic designers, who specialize in designing visual information for print or digital media used for advertizing, publications or websites, has increased in importance in the past decade.

Accompanying this demand has been an upsurge in the popularity of the subject throughout the world, including here in Lebanon, with the American University of Beirut (AUB), LAU, Universite Saint-Esprit de Kaslik (USEK), Notre Dame University, the American University of Science and Technology, and Hawaii University, among others, all offering courses. At LAU there are 400 graphic design students, 200 at USEK, and around 25 graduating every year from AUB. With so many students studying the subject, employment opportunities for quality graphic designers are increasingly scarce, according to professors and students at LAU, AUB and USEK.
