Campaign to Change the Flags Design

Campaign to Change the Flag's Design

It is time to rebrand New Zealand and cash in on our new popularity by turfing our "irrelevant" flag, says another batch of prominent New Zealanders.

Saatchi advertising boss Kevin Roberts, fashion designer Karen Walker, mountaineer Graeme Dingle, artist Dick Frizzell and founder of the Life Education Trust, Trevor Grice, today backed an online campaign to change the flag's design.

Walker called the existing flag "irrelevant and unidentifiable" while Roberts said Peter Jackson's Rings trilogy had raised the stakes.

"New Zealand is again a hot dinner topic in Los Angeles and New York. We must capitalise on this and not let the opportunity slip.

"We need to keep the conversation going; increase our national identity here at home and overseas."

Identities such as Neil Finn, Olympic medallist Barbara Kendall and squash champion Dame Susan Devoy have also endorsed the campaign, seeking 300,000 signatures by early next year for a referendum on a new national flag.

United Way Changing Logo

United Way Changing Logo

After 30 years, United Way's "helping hand" brandmark is being updated to reflect the organization's new vision for its philanthropic work.

The new logo will be phased in over the next year at all 1,400 United Ways nationwide.

In Rhode Island, the new logo will be officially used for the first time in United Way of Rhode Island's (UWRI) annual report to be published in July.

According to UWRI Marketing Director Jan Mariani, while the familiar "helping hand with the rainbow of hope and the person as a symbol of humanity" are not being replaced, they're now joined with the words "United Way" in an enclosed box.

"The updated design visually illustrates the connection between our name and our work," she said. United Ways across the country are moving towards a community impact approach where fundraising is but one strategy to bring about real, measurable and lasting change in the lives of people in need.

Legendary graphic designer Saul Bass created the original "helping hand" logo in 1973. The logo contributed to United Way becoming one of the most highly recognized and regarded brands in the world. In fact, recent research conducted by Interbrand, a global brand research firm, found that the United Way brandmark ranks in the top ten of the worlds' most recognized brands.

Turkey Native Designs Putnam's Anniversary Logo

Putnam's Sesquicentennial Committee announced the winners of its logo and slogan contests, marking the start of the the town's150th anniversary celebration.

Contestants from the town's public and private schools, kindergarten through the 12th grade, were involved under the direction of Putnam Sesquicentennial Committee member and Putnam Middle School seventh-grade teacher Jeanne Benoit.

The committee chose winners from each grade in each school, including all of Putnam's public schools, Saint Mary's School and the Putnam Science Academy.

The committee recently displayed the finalists' work at the Town Hall, then chose the winners.

Putnam's official Sesquicentennial logo was designed by 18-year-old Putnam Science Academy senior Bulent Yalcin.

Yalcin graduated this month, and is looking forward to attending college at the State University of New York, where he plans to study computer engineering and graphic design.

He's not your typical Putnam teenager. A resident of Queens, N.Y., he emigrated to America with his parents from his native Turkey when he was 3. The computer science and art student attended the academy for just eight weeks in February.
