Fresh Work From Canadas Rising Star of New Modernist Typography

Fresh Work From Canada's Rising Star of New Modernist Typography

Canada's rising star of new modernist typography is staging a groundbreaking exhibit called "MyType" as part of the festival of architecture and design in Toronto.

Noel Nanton, the creative director of typotherapy+design, has created a series of original, type-based posters reflecting his own, very new take on classic modernist typography.

Starting with the premise that typefaces are as expressive as the words they form, Nanton has designed a collection of posters that explore the relationship between positive and negative space.

Each poster is an original work of art and showcases Nanton's unique, type-based language.

"Letters speak," says Nanton. "In this exhibit, I'm exploring type as a medium, as a language of its own.

It's what type can do when it's set free from words."

Varoom Issue 06

Illustration magazine Varoom discovers Collectivism in issue 06.

Edited by award winning art director, writer and design consultant Adrian Shaughnessy, Varoom 06 takes a critical look at collaborative models of practice in an international context.

Lydia Fulton explores four illustration collectives: NousVous, Rinzen, Elvis Studio and Peep Show. Is this the future?

Jo Davies interviews Brad Holland, icon of American Illustration, discussing his early development, his uncompromising attitude, fighting for illustrators' rights, the pulse of American creativity now, and what he plans for the future.

Rodney Palmer takes to the streets of Chile where "outsider" art, produced on paper and pasted up in public places is a potent weapon of critique.

Queen of contemporary childrens' illustration, Czech artist Kveta Pacovska is profiled by Wendy Coates Smith, delving into her prolific catalogue of more than 60 beautiful books.

In Peddling Fast Food As Fine Dining, Dust pose the question "If culture is finite and enrichment is the goal, who chooses what stays?"

Their visual essay investigates the notions of "less is less is less" and "making a silk ear out of a sow's purse."

Indigo Linking Cultures Through Design

Indigo: Linking Cultures Through Design

An international programme that provides a platform for Indigenous design entitled Indigo was launched in Melbourne by Icograda, the world body for professional communication design, in partnership with Australia's National Design Centre.

Indigo is an ongoing programme that offers opportunities for local and Indigenous designers across the globe.

As designers work within a global context seemingly without borders, Indigo provides a platform for evolving creative expressions that shape the formation of national cultural identities.

"Indigo seeks to understand what makes design distinctive to its home, the connections to the place where it is made and for whom it is made," said Kathy Demos, Director of the National Design Centre.

"To address this, we have set up a network of designers and a series of projects that explore its meaning and interpretation throughout the world."
