Changes in technology and stylistic developments in the design, use and reproduction of typeface designs were exponential in the last two decades of the twentieth century.
This was due in no small part to the availability of the desktop computer and associated software.
Anthony Cahalan investigates this late twentieth century proliferation of Western typefaces by analyzing and interpreting the phenomenon from the perspective of those studied: graphic designers and similar experienced users of typefaces, rather than the general population of computer users.
This book documents the way these design and typography professionals saw the type design industry from the inside to provide fascinating "snapshots in time" of typeface design during this exciting period.

Quark announced that it has launched a community-based Web site for designers called ilovedesign.
The Web site is developed around an interactive and accessible community concept that was inspired by a love for design.
It features the work of leading industry designers David Carson, Peter Saville, Chip Kidd, and many more and gives users the opportunity to showcase their own work and become part of a design community.
On visiting the ilovedesign Web site, users are encouraged to join this community by creating their own profiles and uploading samples of their own design work.
Users can also search, view, and rate designs uploaded by other members and even contact them in a secure way.
The content of the site will be largely user generated and the aim is to create a platform where designers can showcase their work, be inspired by the work of others, and discuss their love of design.
Video testimonials from influential designers including Carson, Saville, and Kidd provide inspiration for users, as they can watch and listen to their heroes tell their own stories, debate the relevance of design in today's world, and contemplate its future.
Designers can also learn how leading global brands, such as the Salvation Army, Metro International, Design Week, and many others, are using QuarkXPress 7 and view samples of some of their work.

Those who appreciate the art of book-jacket and text design once again will have the opportunity to view award-winning selections from some of the nation's scholarly presses at the annual Association of American University Presses Book, Jacket and Journal Show.
The exhibit features 51 books and 32 jackets and covers.
For judging purposes, the books were divided into categories of scholarly or trade typographic and illustrated; poetry and literature; and reference.
Winners were selected from 293 books, 335 jackets and covers, and six journals that were published in 2006 and submitted by university presses.
Judges chose books for superior layout of typography or illustration; jackets and journals were judged for outstanding overall design.
The hands-on exhibit permits viewers to open and examine the volumes for a closer appreciation of the styles of bookmaking and design.
Complimentary copies of the show catalogue containing design specifications and jurors' comments will be available for visitors.
