Oliver Weiss, an illustrator and designer from Germany, has just been assigned the first prize in the 2008 Munich Oktoberfest poster design competition on behalf of the city of Munich on January 31st.
His pop art design will be shown on posters, in brochures, and on memorabilia ranging from beer bugs to glasses, t-shirts and caps.
The competition has been organized by the city of Munich to celebrate the largest beer festival worldwide, the famous Oktoberfest which has been a landmark event for almost 200 years now.
A closed competition, the jury has chosen from 21 entries, seeking designs which highlight the uniqueness of the festival by communicating a joie de vivre, as well as humor and overall charm.
Oliver Weiss' motif is essentially a vibrantly colorful pop art collage using some of the "usual suspects," a heart, a Ferris wheel, a pretzel, and - this goes without saying - a beer mug.

Despite their rich tradition of calligraphy, the Arab World and Persia are not known for their contemporary graphic design, illustration and typography.
Especially now, it's worth taking a look at the region's creativity.
Young designers are just beginning to chart their own compelling course between local visual convention and a modern, international style.
Arabesque investigates the creative potential of the Arab World and Iran.
This book features examples of recent innovative and groundbreaking design work that is inspired by the richness of the region's visual culture.
Given the important role of calligraphy in the Middle East, Arabesque focuses on typography.
The book presents a wide range of modern Arabic fonts and typefaces; these are accompanied by a rich selection of applications.
Further examples of design and graffiti serve as powerful demonstrations of how text can be used illustratively.
This work is particularly relevant to those now creating street art and poster design.
Arabesque also features graphic design, logos and illustration by young designers and activists from Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon, which is complemented by selected projects by Western designers, who are strongly influenced by Arab culture.
Regardless of the location and ancestry of their creators, all of the examples included in Arabesque combine modern design with the traditional, letter-based canon of Arab forms in striking ways.

There is a very good reason why the same designers get published over and over again.
Certainly, the excellence of their work is part of it, and some employ PR firms and other promotional vehicles to broadcast their achievements.
Having lots of money and an army of publicists are not required to get your work noticed, though.
Most of all you should be media-ready-in other words, when the presses are ready to roll, not only do you have the goods to flaunt, but also the know-how to package and deliver your message to the public.
Don't be afraid to toot your own horn either.
Having just recently filed several large feature articles on designers who were novices at dealing with the press, I am compelled to offer some suggestions to get all designers ready for their close-ups.
Follow this advice and you'll be prepared when the opportunity arises-and happy with the coverage you get.
