Sockeye Creative of Portland brings on Laura Williams as Senior Designer.
Williams is a graduate of Portfolio Center in her hometown of Atlanta.
After attaining a degree in Design and Art Direction, she moved to Seattle and worked as a designer for both Fitch and Methodologie.
Williams' frequent visits to Portland eventually captured her heart, and she made Portland her new home.
She became acquainted with Sockeye's high visibility identity work for many Portland institutions, notably PSU.
She began working with Sockeye as a freelance designer before transitioning into her current role as senior designer.

Design Victoria together with Sustainability Victoria announced the next seminar in the Business Ready, Design for Sustainability Series: Sustainable Packaging Trends and Opportunities.
This seminar will feature a presentation by Professor Scott Boylston from Savannah College of Art and Design (USA).
Sustainable packaging is not only about changing materials and improving recycling.
It is also about decreasing the amount of packaging used.
Designing packaging that is functional, cost effective, has no harmful side effects on human health and minimises the impact on the environment is an increasing priority for designers, industry and consumers.
What role can designers play in designing packaging that meets this brief?
This event will suit designers from all disciplines with an interest in sustainability issues, but particularly graphic designers and those responsible for packaging design.

Research into Practice 2008 will be held on 31 October 2008 at the Royal Society of Arts, London, and will explore the problem of interpretation in research in the visual and performing arts.
It is characteristic of research outputs, reports and theses in traditional disciplines that they are expressed in unambiguous language.
One reason for this is to establish the grounds and argument from which the conclusions derive.
Another reason is to be quite clear and explicit about what is being claimed as original by the author for the research.
This characteristic has the effect of reinforcing the dominant knowledge models such as "the scientific method", "empirical methods", etc.
However these models come from disciplines whose aims and objectives may differ from those in the arts and humanities.
There has been much discussion about the suitability of such models for the visual and performing arts, which seem to rely on a more pluralistic approach to interpretation which values the fact that different generations and different cultures find their own value in the artefact.
The conference will focus on the theory of interpretation in research in traditional disciplines and on the emerging theory of interpretation in research in the visual and performing arts.

The Icograda website, which attracts more than 14 million hits annually from an international, multilingual audience, has been redesigned to provide even more content, incorporating exciting new features and a cleaner user experience.
The redesign has been a collaborative project with IDA partner, Icsid (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design).
Working with Vancouver, Canada based Ion Design and Smallbox Software, the new site aligns Icograda's brand, adds a case study and resource library, project gallery, photo archive and blog as new elements, while retaining its key features that have become widely respected tools.
A highlight of the new site is unifying all members in one searchable database, so that all Icograda members - design associations, promotional bodies, education institutions and individual Icograda Friends - can be located from one easy access point.
"The ability to look across 67 countries and regions around the globe and find all the Icograda contacts in a single location with one simple search is a feature that responds to our users' input," says Brenda Sanderson, Icograda's Managing Director.

People have been reading meaning into works of art since long before Freud, but there are some creatives who wear the clues to their subconscious on their sleeve.
The eight illustrators featured in this issue share an apparently child-like approach to their work, but the semiotics is often a give-away to hidden strands of deeper meaning.
Featured artists are Merijn Hos aka Bfree, Concrete Hermit, Geoff McFetridge, Hidehito Shinnou, Hvass&Hannibal, Ian Stevenson, Jellymon, and Jessie Hartland.
