Making Policy Public Call for Graphic Designers

Making Policy Public: Call for Graphic Designers

CUP is seeking designers who are interested in using communication design to illuminate pressing issues of our day for the next issues of Making Policy Public.

Designers chosen through the juried submission process will receive full attribution for their work, an honorarium of $1000, and publicity through CUP.

CUP will manage the design process and provide design support as needed.

Making Policy Public uses innovative graphic design to explore and explain public policy.

Each publication is the product of a commissioned collaboration between a designer and an advocate.

This series aims to make information on public policy truly public: accessible, meaningful, and shared.

Designers can engage social issues without sacrificing experimentation.

Proposals must be received by June 16, 2008, no later than midnight.

Saul Steinberg Illuminations

Saul Steinberg: Illuminations

Cover pictures and drawings for "The New Yorker" made Saul Steinberg (1914-1999) famous.

However, it is not widely known that his drawings hung in the same galleries as the canvases of his New York School friends and that his European circle of fellow artists included Le Corbusier, Alberto Giacometti and Henri Cartier-Bresson.

This exhibition is his first retrospective in Switzerland.

In an age more inclined to see itself reflected in photographs, abstract art, cinema and television, Saul Steinberg, who died in 1999, was a master of the hand-drawn line.

His modernist, clean lines defined a twentieth-century style.

His first exhibition in Switzerland at the Kunsthaus Zurich will cover the full range of his art, with over one hundred drawings, collages and objects from The Saul Steinberg Foundation and private collections.

Advertising Art First Ever Exhibition to Recognise the Art of Advertising

Advertising Art: First Ever Exhibition to Recognise the Art of Advertising

Works by photographers Irving Penn, Nadav Kander and Richard Avedon are among those on show at a new exhibition called Advertising Art.

Avedon's iconic photograph of model Iman for an Alexon campaign, along with a striking campaign for L'Oreal by Penn, will line up alongside famous images for Silk Cut, Absolut Vodka, Pirelli Tyres and Boddingtons.

The aim of the exhibition, organised by The Chambers Gallery in London, is to showcase the art of the art director.

The curator, Philip Roe, comments: "This exhibition, the first to offer original advertising artwork for sale as fine art, will signal the end of that hoary old debate about the status of commercial art.

We can see for ourselves: advertising art can be art of the highest quality."

The exhibition features original photographs and artwork for ads created by some of the most famous names in UK advertising, including the late great Paul Arden, who died last month; Sir John Hegarty; Tim Delaney; and Paul Belford, among others.

The Advertising Art exhibition runs from May 14 until June 14.

The Finger Oded Ezers New Typo Art Project

The Finger: Oded Ezer's New Typo Art Project

The Finger - Oded Ezer's new typo art project, is an imaginary landscape of Hebrew letters.

It was originally created as a homage to the Israeli poet, choreographer and art critic Hezi Leskley (1952-1994), echoing the title of his first book, published in 1986.

The project consists on a short movie and a poster.

Designer as Author

Designer as Author

The Brandenburg Culture Foundation has a new home for its art museum within one of the most beautiful power stations of the Twenties.

The listed brick building -originally designed by Werner Issel- has been carefully converted by Anderhalten Architekten to provide excellent exhibition spaces.

A new book that explores the historical background, describes the building process and presents the final result has just been published by Jovis Verlag.

SV Associates were asked to design the book after successfully completing the museum sign system earlier this year.

The designer Nick Kapica assumed the role of author, developing the initial concept, selecting the content and providing the structure for Falk Jaeger to write the texts.

All of the large format photography is by Ursula Böhmer who documented the entire building process.

The book has been designed for a wide audience and not solely architects.

This is the fourth book by SV Associates where the designers are the authors and it once again shows they can produce excellent results.

The first section contains images printed in two Pantone inks, Black 7 and Cool grey 11 on un-coated paper, the building process is illustrated in full colour on un-coated paper and the final section is of full colour images from the completed building on coated paper.
