SV Associates Design Orientation System for Kunstmuseum Dieselkraftwerk CottbusDue to open in May 2008 the Kunstmuseum Dieselkraftwerk Cottbus will be doing for Cottbus what the Tate Modern has done for London.
An expressionist diesel-electric power station constructed in 1927 originally designed by Werner Issel has been transformed into an contemporary art museum.
The typeface Neo Futura by Milton Glaser was chosen for all signs, its industrial feel providing reference to the original power station signs.
Applied directly to the concrete walls and as vinyl lettering to painted surfaces the museum has been provided with a simple cost effective system.
The Neo Futura will also be used for the main external signs, advertising banner and flags.
SV Associates have worked closely both with Anderhalten Architekten in Berlin who were responsible for the renovation and also the new user.
It was important to find a solution that functions with the powerful architecture and also provides a reference to the past while supporting the contemporary use.
