Learning to Lead: A Guide to Nurturing Our Innate Leadership Skills
October 15, 2007 | Levent OZLER
Many of us who studied design in college missed those "leadership classes" typically offered to the business students - our educational focus was on learning creative processes and improving our visual skills.
But times have changed.
As the definition of corporate competitiveness evolves, the expectations placed upon the design profession grow exponentially.
As advocates of innovation and creative thinking, designers are perfectly predisposed to strengthen their organization's competitive position.
However, the demand for design leaders far outstrips the supply.
The prevailing myth of the charismatic leader as a solitary figure wielding ultimate power and authority is no longer applicable.
The capacity to foster collective action, mobilizing people to advance new levels of competitiveness is the new definition of leadership.
This seminar will examine the fundamental precepts of leadership, diagnose the role of the design leader, explore how core leadership skills can be learned, applied and leveraged as well as help you develop your own personal leadership style.
As designers ascend the management ladder, one of the hardest challenges they will face is conquering the "soft" skills of leadership.
If you're interested in fine-tuning your personal leadership capabilities, and/or are responsible for fostering that aptitude in others within your organization, this seminar is definitely for you.
