Many Local Firms Unaware of Product Design Importance
October 16, 2007 | Levent OZLER
Not many Vietnamese firms have fully noticed the importance of industrial designing for their products, which will adversely affect their competitiveness, said an official of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI).
Le Binh Hung, deputy general director of VCCI-HCMC, raised the concern at a seminar on "Product Designs and Economic Development" held by the Italian Trade Commission yesterday.
Hung told the seminar that local companies had not centered much investment on product designing as proved by only nearly 1,600 applications for industrial design registrations lodged to the Vietnam Intellectual Property Department in 2006.
Hung pointed out domestic companies had exerted more efforts on the functions of their products than on designs so they now mainly exported labor value and materials rather than products of high-added values.
Fausto Pugnaloni from Italy's University of Marche suggested local firms to design products from their own creativity rather than trying to copy Western models.
He also stressed close relations between product quality and designs.
