Click 3X Designs for Jonathan Demme's New Documentary

November 13, 2007  |  Levent OZLER

Creative Director Steve Tozzi and the team at Click 3X recently completed design/VFX work for opening titles, end credits, and several critical shots throughout academy-award winning director Jonathan Demme's recent documentary titled, Jimmy Carter Man from Plains, which is scheduled to open in select cities on October 26. The film is a chronicle of the former president's recent travels promoting his book, "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid."

Originally hired to do the opening titles and end credits for the documentary, Click collaborated extremely well with director Jonathan Demme and initiated concepts for a series of design/VFX shots used throughout the film. Demme notes, "We had an exceptional experience working with Click. They made a brilliant and invaluable contribution to the film, bringing rampant creativity and a fierce professionalism. Plus, the whole team was a lot of fun to work with." Steve Tozzi is also working on the poster for the film. Click's ability to deliver powerful design creative has opened doors to a wide range of projects recently, as the team has been expanding their reach across film, music videos, television, and commercials.

Commenting on the creative process for the Carter film project, Tozzi notes, "Jonathan made it clear that this wasn't a typical documentary, that it was definitely a bit non-traditional. As a result, we wanted to come up with new ideas to make each location stamp really unique, so that it would be able to stand out with each city's personality. We had quite a bit of creative freedom and tried to come up with a design framework that supported the style and feel of the film, really reflecting and supporting President Carter's journey." Aaron Vasquez, Click's Senior Flame Artist on the project, adds, "The title designs for the film are graphic with a textured feel, yet maintain a grasp of reality by locking into kinetic handheld moving footage. This presented us with an interesting challenge where some scene designs had to be displaced by natural elements such as wind and water. The uniqueness of the shot also gave us a terrific opportunity to invent an interesting hybrid of VFX and design."

Click has been doing quite a bit of diverse animation projects recently, and is able to draw on their design and artistic talents to consistently deliver creative and effective work. In addition, Click also recently partnered with Campfire to launch Clickfire Media, a firm dedicated to delivering cutting-edge integrated media solutions. Click's recent projects, including a Peacebone music video, intricate effects for a Sharp spot, and My Home 2.0, a reality TV series, all showcase this strong design creative. The My Home 2.0 project is a five episode series done in conjunction with Campfire for Verizon Fios, that is being shot on location in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, with the Click team involved in the entire production, including shooting, designing, editing, and finishing in HD. Highlighting their commitment to growth, Click's EP Jason Mayo comments, "This has been a great year as we have been able to really strengthen our reputation for working on high-end, cool projects that keep the artists coming back. We have also been expanding our ability and capacity to deliver premium film work-we certainly have the technology, creative ability, and equipment to work across Flame and HD."
