January 21, 2008 | Levent OZLER
red dot academy hosted the inaugural session of a series of evening talks on business and design on 9 January at the red dot design museum in Singapore.
"How to protect your designs - exploring strategies for Intellectual Property protection" was the topic for the evening.
Speaker Gregory Ong, a solicitor of Gregory Ong & Co., is a strong advocate of intellectual property rights and protection.
He spoke about how a good understanding of intellectual property rights over designs will help designers make important, educated decisions on how to properly and cost-effectively protect their designs against unauthorised copying and activities of infringement.
Design students and academics, designers, and business professionals attended the conference.
Gregory Ong started the session with case studies to highlight what are the different aspects of a product that may require protection and the respective duration of protection.
Examples on common cases of law infringement in areas of software programming, art paintings and even fashion designs were discussed as well as topics such as copyrights, patents, registered designs, trademarks and trade secrets.
