Parsons Presents 2008 MFA Fine Art Exhibition at the Kitchen

Parsons Presents 2008 MFA Fine Art Exhibition at the Kitchen

April 6, 2008  |  Levent OZLER

Parsons the New School for Design will present the 2008 MFA Fine Art Thesis Exhibition, on view May 1-10 at The Kitchen in Chelsea. The show brings together drawings, paintings, videos, mixed media, installation and performance from 22 artists with diverse backgrounds, interests, and intentions. Reflecting the range and intricacy of the present art world, the artists' individual visions promise a strong and vibrant art world in the future. The Kitchen Gallery is free and open to the public; an opening reception will be held May 1 from 6-8 pm.

The exhibition is organized by Bill Carroll, the former director of the Elizabeth Harris and Charles Cowles galleries, through an innovative course he taught called "Theory, Practice and Career, which is required of all graduating students in the program. The course enabled the students to play an unusually active role in its organization - securing the exhibition space, developing the catalogue, and helping to conduct its marketing and promotion. Now in its fifth year, the course was established through a grant from the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation, which has bestowed grants upon only five other MFA Fine Arts programs (Columbia University; Virginia Commonwealth University; the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and CalArts).

A catalogue accompanying the show includes an introduction by core faculty member Tom Butter, who writes that the exhibition is "A reminder, hint, marker, or tease, evoking what has gone on during the last two years with the Fine Art graduate students at Parsons... A stunning accomplishment on the part of the individuals involved, reflecting back on the community they belonged to and were served by."
