Equilateral 08:01 Design Exhibition
April 16, 2008 | Levent OZLER
The Meatpacking District (MPDI) promises to be the crown jewel of New York City's Design Week 2008. A landmark location for exhibitions, product launches, panel discussions, and cocktail receptions, the MPDI will welcome design professionals and aficionados alike to more than one hundred of the city's most exciting venues during the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) May 19-22, 2008.
IDSA.NYC announced Equilateral 08:01, the first in a series of collaborative events with internationally renowned fashion label RUBIN CHAPELLE and lighting expert J. F. Ahlin. Opening on May 18th, 2008, RUBIN CHAPELLE will feature a one-of-a-kind gallery environment where three creative forces-product design, fashion, and lighting- intersect, reflecting the Meatpacking District's multi-disciplinary allure. Sonja Rubin affirms, "We have done numerous art exhibitions in our Meat packing district store. We love the energy around the ICFF and want to celebrate that."
No fewer than nine of IDSA.NYC's brightest designers will be highlighted in the exhibit. Their work will be on display at RUBIN CHAPELLE, and also on the showroom floor at ICFF. "This is IDSA's third year as an ICFF exhibitor," states Meredith Goodwin Bajaj, President of IDSA.NYC. "We are proud to offer this opportunity for our members-especially emerging designers-and we are very excited to celebrate design with RUBIN CHAPELLE!"
Sonja Rubin and Kip Chapelle joined forces to create an avant-garde fashion label, received with great enthusiasm internationally since 1997. Rubin's eye for distinctive detail and construction combined with Chapelle's eye for progressive authenticity provides discerning fashion clients with a unique sensibility that remains accessible. "As fashion designers in New York City, we have always supported artists from all backgrounds," says Kip Chapelle, "And I am especially excited about the collaboration with IDSA."
In 2002, Selldorf Architects transformed a meatpacking plant into the RUBIN CHAPELLE boutique. Stripping the 2,500-square-foot interior to its bones, principal Annabelle Selldorf exposed brick walls, and salvaged wood beams to reuse as decorative and display elements. A ghostly female profile on the brick wall is by Rubin and Chapelle's artist-friend Lisa Stewart. J. F. Ahlin, Senior Designer and Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Nulux Inc., provided the track lighting set into narrow troughs. Mr. Ahlin offers expertise in Vision Contol for many private art collections, museums, and art organizations.
