Product-Service Systems: a New Approach to Sustainable Design and Business Success
May 27, 2008 | Levent OZLER
Eco-design continues to deliver significant environmental improvements in products. After almost two decades of international work, there now exists sound methodologies, tools and an impressive array of products in the market to guide and inspire.
Design is helping to produce new product systems as well as new entrepreneurial businesses, many of which are focused on services. Out of this new market dynamic is an approach to sustainable design called Product-Service Systems (PSS).
PSS requires a new approach to design which will be explained in this breakfast workshop, based on the 'how to' section of a forthcoming practical manual - D4S (Design for Sustainability) published by the UN Environment Program. This section is written by Ursula Tischner, Chris Ryan and Carlo Vezzoli. Ursula will also draw on case studies from her recent book New Business for Old Europe (2006), edited with Arnold Tucker.
Speakers
Ursula Tischner, architect, industrial designer and the Director of ec[o]ncept in Cologne, has over 15 years experience in Eco-Design. At the Wuppertal Institute in Germany, she has helped to develop global concepts including: eco-efficiency, MIPS, Factor 4 and Factor 10. Ursula coordinates the Master in Sustainable Design at the Design Academy Eindhoven, and is Associate Professor at the Zurich Design School.
Chris Ryan, Professor of eco-innovation at the University of Melbourne and Director of the Victorian Eco-innovation Lab, has been at the forefront of eco-design in both Australia and Europe for more than a decade, collaborating on many eco-design research groups in Europe.
