Designer Jewellery: Rashid for Golay

May 15, 2004  |  bengisu

From Domus Magazine.

Judging by the result - elegant and simple - you wouldn't think that they took four years of work. A close collaboration between Karim Rashid, eclectic designer of sofas, objects, rugs, lamps and innovative cosmetics packaging, together with Swiss jewellers Golay, specialists in the pearl business, both natural and cultivated.

"An almost symbiotic relationship where I was able to confront myself with a totally different culture and world from my own". This is how the American designer describes his first experience in the world of jewellery. "In reality I have always wanted to design jewellery, for the freedom it allows you and how you can express yourself as an artist and not just as a designer". Three shapes that repeated and combined, form the basis of a highly precious collection of rings, necklaces and bracelets.

The designer's intention is to emphasise the beauty of the pearls that seem to be still in the oyster shell. "It's a seed in preparation", explains Rashid: "I'm designing a headdress completely covered in pearls that come down to the face". A unique object that only a few will be able to afford. Prices for the collection? From 1,200 to 35,000. E.S.
