Design Rules Set for Safer Student Transport
August 15, 2008 | Levent OZLER
The Canadian Standards Association on Wednesday has made public its requirements for a new class of vehicle intended as a safer alternative for transporting students to extracurricular events.
The new vehicle, called a multi-functional activity bus, would have many of the safety features of a regular school bus, but would be more compact, cheaper and designed for transporting smaller groups.
Nothing exactly like this is currently on the road.
According to CSA spokesman Anthony Toderian, the bus could be used in place of "non-conforming" vehicles that do not meet school-bus standards - such as the 15-passenger van involved in the horrific January crash that killed eight people in Bathurst - but have increasingly been used for transporting students.
