Fresh Perspectives in Industrial Design

Fresh Perspectives in Industrial Design

June 11, 2004  |  Levent OZLER

A multipurpose grocery basket, shoes with antishock padding, and a foot-operated soil cultivator. These and more innovative items are now on display at the Paglulunsad 2004 exhibit, being held at the Product Development and Design Center of the Philippines (PDDCP) until June 15.

The items were designed by 59 graduating students from the University of the Philippines in Diliman (UP) and the Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT).

More than a hundred plates of the students' best works are on showcase, covering various design inclinations from communications design (packaging, graphics, exhibition, photography) to product design-attempting to infuse fun and fresh ideas on industrial applications.

UP students submitted projects for communications design, while MIT students focused their works on engineering-driven product designs. MIT's Ahmed Cruz submitted this year's Best Thesis with his redesign of the grocery basket. UP's Jury's Choice for Best Thesis, Ma. Sofia Gonzales, designed a pair of fashionable ladies footwear with interchangeable straps and heels, and antishock gel padding. Last year's third prizewinner in the 8th Furniture Design Competition, UP student Mark Rudolf Villoso and character designer-illustrat or Ruben de Vela (UP) are also among the participants.
