Winner of the 2009 Next Generation Competition to be Announced

May 5, 2009  |  Levent OZLER

On May 18th, the architecture and design community will gather in New York to celebrate this year's winner of the prestigious Metropolis Next Generation Design Competition at a ceremony hosted by Herman Miller, Inc.

The unique design competition, now in its sixth year, recognizes outstanding ideas from young architects and designers worldwide that make our built environment better, safer and more sustainable.

The individual or team submitting the winning entry for the year is awarded $10,000 which serves as seed money to develop or find funding for their idea.

Each year, the competition has a specific challenge: for the 2009 competition, entrants submitted proposals to Fix Our Energy Addiction.

"I'm proud of the way that the design community responded to this year's challenge, which most people expect would attract scientists and policy makers rather than designers and architects.

The ideas of our finalists were viable, realistic and imaginative - and the idea of our winner, the first international team to win the award, is breathtaking and ready to go," notes the publisher of Metropolis, Horace Havemeyer III.

This year's winning project is from a Paris-based team consisting of two architects and an engineer.

Specifics on the winning project, as well as other eight outstanding submissions chosen for runner-up recognition, will be revealed at the May 18th event.
