New SDC Product: Metameric Samples

A set of metameric samples has been produced by the SDC which form a simple and effective educational tool for use anywhere that colour plays a vital role.
It is a fact that two coloured fabrics which match when viewed under one light source may differ under another light source - a phenomenon known as illuminant metamerism.
Until now, there has been no cost-effective product on the market to demonstrate metamerism using textile samples.
In the new SDC product, the set of four cotton samples demonstrates illuminant metamerism, through a careful selection of dyes.
This is best demonstrated in a light cabinet containing D65 (artificial daylight), TL84 (fluorescent store light) and tungsten light sources.
The metamerism is also evident even without the use of a light cabinet, which makes this product ideal for use by both industry and educational establishments.
"Metamerism is one of the most misunderstood concepts in colour communication and difficult to explain verbally," commented Andrew Filarowski, the SDC technical officer.
"This is what industry told us and we knew from our own experience from our colour courses.
This set of dyed fabric samples in a handy A4 size was therefore developed so that the visual effect could be shown and used in all industries."
