Robosapien: Intelligent Entertainment Humanoid Design

June 17, 2004  |  Levent OZLER

In what industry knaves describe as "a giant leap for robotics", a new personal entertainment robot, or intelligent entertainment humanoid, the Robosapien, has arrived.

And for those who do feel the need to be entertained by a small robot, the little fella, who is battery-operated and remote-controlled, can perform up to 67 pre-programmed functions - including picking things up, throwing, high-fiving, whistling and dancing.

He can be taught his own dance routine and, impressively, he also knows three karate moves, which is of course more than most actual humans.

He even has 28 "secret" moves up his sleeve - which one would presumably discover after getting to know him a little bit better.

Robosapien, who stands all of 32 centimetres high, was created by robotics physicist, Mark Tilden, who says he is the first robot to be created using applied biomorphic robotics.

Apparently, this means that while other robots look they were designed on graph paper, he is based on the natural lines and principles of living things, and is ultimately able to act more like a human being than a robot.

In order to perform his robot moves, Robosapien has left side and right side touch sensors on his fingertips, toes, and heels, and a sonic detector that allows him to hear sharp sounds or any touch on his outer shell.
