Winners Announced in Vermont Wood Products Design Competition

June 17, 2004  |  Levent OZLER

To the planners of a recent contest designed to raise awareness about Vermont's furniture makers and woodworkers, the quality of the entries was no surprise. But the quantity was. In an overwhelming response to the First Annual Design Competition sponsored by the Vermont Wood Products Marketing Council, about 110 entries were submitted for judging.

From large manufacturers to small shops to hobby woodworkers, all corners of the state and all facets of the industry were represented. According to Council Secretary Mary Jeanne Packer, the planners anticipated about twenty submissions and were amazed at both the number of entries and the diversity of the pieces submitted. "The success of our first competition speaks to the integrity in the wood products industry in Vermont," said Packer.

The goal of the Design Competition was to raise awareness among architects and designers, industry members, and consumers about the diversity, high quality craftsmanship, and innovative design exhibited in Vermont wood products. The only criteria for entry were that the work be designed and made in Vermont by Vermont woodworkers.

Winners were honored at an awards reception held at Shelburne Farms as part of the First Annual Wood Products Showcase. Vermont Governor James Douglas presented the awards.
