June 18, 2004 | Levent OZLER
The next generation of Scotland's craftsmen and women yesterday displayed their talents at an exhibition which is expected to attract thousands of visitors.
Students from Glasgow's 10 colleges of further education displayed curriculum work in the show at the Trades House of Glasgow annual awards.
CraftEx 2004 features a range of subjects including traditional and modern crafts, design and technology.
Ian Elliott, deacon convener of the Trades House of Glasgow, said: "CraftEx highlights the fundamental contribution that is being made by our colleges in honing the skills of our next generation of craftsmen and women here in Glasgow.
"It recognises and rewards the superb talent we have on our doorstep.
"With thousands of people attracted to the show every year, including employers and careers officers, CraftEx is often a springboard for the students gaining employment or starting their own businesses."
A top student is selected in each subject, with all winners receiving a cheque for £200 and the chance of taking an overall gold medal prize.
Christina McKenzie, of North Glasgow College, won the gold medal for her jewelled silver clock, which also won the jewellery allied advanced category.
Maureen Somerville, of Glasgow College of Food Technology, won the Trades House of Glasgow deacon convener's design award for cake decoration.
