Forestworks Works in Wood

Forestworks: Works in Wood

September 16, 2009  |  Levent OZLER

Forestworks - Works in Wood is a joint exhibition by designers Jouko Karkkainen and Tuukka Halonen.

Their works express the joy of creative achievement and the scent of the forest - resin-stained hands and a sharp saw.

Karkkainen and Halonen both have a long experience of designing and working in wood, applying their techniques to furniture, lamps, interior products and wood installations, among other works.

Characteristic of both designers are their bold experiments with material and the study of new techniques.

Jouko Karkkainen's works represent the Finnish heritage in a modern manner.

He seeks to arouse discussion on both the present state of the forest industry and the boundaries of art and design.

Old woodworking methods and natural materials find new and surprising applications in the wooden chairs of Karkkainen's "StoolStories" collection, and there are additions to his "Metsuri" (Lumberjack) collection of designed furniture.

In contrast to these works, Karkkainen also presents a new Ply interior element of oak with technical veneer.

Tuukka Halonen has been influenced by traditional crafts employing wood in its various forms.

He has created new interpretations of the craft heritage utilizing today's manufacturing techniques and materials.

The present exhibition includes veneer plywood lamps inspired by old shinglework, while executed with state of the art water cutting technology.
