Look Both Ways: Illustrated Essays on the Intersection of Life and Design

November 27, 2009  |  Levent OZLER

Look Both Ways is a collection of fully illustrated essays on the intersection of graphic design, love, life, behavior, rituals, brands, perceptions, music, art, even physics.

As partner and president of the design division of Sterling Brands, president of AIGA, host of the award-winning interview program "Design Matters," and design blogger for FastCompany.com, Millman has made a life's work out of understanding the emotional hold brands have over consumers and their importance in our culture.

In Look Both Ways, she writes with humor and insight on both her personal relationship with objects and creativity throughout her life (barrette packaging, Lacoste alligators, candy wrappers), as well as ideas on a grander scale: what compromises do we make when we choose security over creativity?

What happens when we choose one path instead of another?

She brings to life the process by which an artist creates, and how their creations can have a real impact on our lives-even when we don't realize it.

Rather than simply let her words speak for themselves, Millman intended the book to have a powerful visual impact as well-every essay is crafted in such a way that the ideas at the heart of it come across at first glance.

A piece about a magazine created with a friend in childhood is done in cross-stitch (Millman has the original), and an essay about Levi jeans is written on a chalkboard, with previously-written words visible through the dust.
