Urban Omnibus: Off the Road and Into the Skies
January 7, 2010 | Levent OZLER
This week Urban Omnibus features an "off-road" solution to New York City's transit problems.
In it, Steven Dale explains how Cable-Propelled Transit (aerial gondolas), a system often misunderstood and under-appreciated, can provide cheap, fast, reliable, high-capacity public transportation using paths rarely considered in traditional, road-based transit planning.
On the eve of the Roosevelt Island Tram's refurbishment in March, Dale looks at the history of the technology in New York City and imagines its potential across the five boroughs -- including a suggested Brooklyn-to-Newark Airport route.
