The Royal College of Art Design Products Department will be exhibiting again in the Ventura Lambrate district at this year's Milan Salone Del Mobile.
RCA Campsite will include new designs by RCA Design Products MA students and graduates as well as the recently launched Design Products Collection, a new initiative set up by Head of Department, Professor Tord Boontje and Senior Tutor, Gareth Williams. The exhibition will be located in an industrial hall just off Via Ventura and will be curated by RCA Tutor, Onkar Kular.
"We're really excited to be showing the Design Products Collection alongside work by our current students and recent graduates," said Professor Boontje. "We've moved to an exciting new space which we hope will show international visitors the breadth of talent coming out of the Design Products course at the RCA."
Amongst the work by recent graduates will be Seongyong Lee's lightweight Plytube furniture constructed from innovative tubes of wood veneer which has been nominated for the Brit Insurance Design of the Year Award; Kieren Jones' speculative Chicken Project which imagines products to be made using every part of a chicken and Lisa Johansson's domestic compost distiller.
RCA students produce some of the best design in the world, yet there is sometimes a gap between a great student project and a realisable product for the market. The Design Products Collection is a bridge for graduates and Department faculty to make their original and innovative design proposals commercially viable.
Boontje and Williams personally selected the designs for the Collection and called it 'First Hand' because it gives buyers direct access to new design concepts, innovative craft-making and applications of technology. There are fourteen products by thirteen designers including a table by El Ultimo Grito. The Collection has a strong emphasis on furniture but also includes lighting, a clock, a radio, ceramics, jewellery and a kit to create a 3-d computer game avatar.
