George Lucas Opens Animation Studio in Singapore

George Lucas, creator of the blockbuster "Star Wars" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark" film series, has announced the opening of a digital animation studio in Singapore, Xinhua reports.

This is the first overseas foray by his Lucasfilm production company. The studio, named Lucasfilm Animation Singapore (LAS), will produce digital animated content including films, television and games for global audiences.

"I've been a fan of Asian animation and illustration all my life. Asian cinema has had a particularly big impact on a lot of my work," Lucas said in a statement.

"By having a base in Singapore, we can create a new style of animation that will blend East and West -- and offer something not seen before."

Gail Currey, vice-president and general manager of Lucasfilm Animation, will head the Singapore-based team. Financing for LAS is a joint venture between Lucasfilm Ltd and Singapore's Economic Development Board (EDB).

The EDB has a 25 percent stake in the venture while Lucasfilm has invested the remainder.

Lucasfilm President Micheline Chau said Singapore was chosen because it has a growing talent base, a cosmopolitan flavour and "attractiveness as a place to live".
