Mulan Gets Digital Extreme Makeover

As it did earlier this month with the release of Aladdin, Disney has given Mulan (Buena Vista) a deluxe, Special Edition digital makeover, so this two-disc DVD looks and sounds noticeably more spectacular, even though the original elements are only six years old.

Mulan, voiced by Ming-Na (ER), is a latter-day Disney heroine who, although she lives in ancient China, is strong-spirited and independent in a very modern way. So much so that she rejects her family's marriage plans for her and, when the evil Hun invade, disguises herself as a man to take her noble but ailing father's place in the Chinese army to defend the homeland. Eddie Murphy is along for the adventure as another of those cute animated sidekicks - this time, the small but feisty dragon Mushu.

Other voices include George Takei, Pat Morita and Miguel Ferrer. Music vocals are contributed by Donny Osmond and Lea Salonga, with an eclectic batch of music videos provided by Raven, Christina Aguilera, Stevie Wonder and Jackie Chan.

The digital 5.1 surround sound is awesome, as is the animation and bright colour palette. (The Hun charge and avalanche sequence is as good as this kind of animated entertainment gets.)
