New MySQL is Ready

New MySQL is Ready

October 28, 2004  |  Levent OZLER

The latest point release of MySQL database is now good to go, the company said Wednesday.

MySQL 4.1, available in both open-source and commercial versions, promises more enterprise-worthy features and faster query performance through support for subqueries, according to MySQL, Cupertino, Calif.

The database, which runs on Windows, Linux, Solaris, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, HP-UX, and AIX, is now downloadable.

The release adds "extensive" Unicode support and new GUI installer and configuration wizards for Windows and Linux to ease setup. There is also new OpenSSL-encrypted client/server communications and support of subqueries and derived tables, which should speed search and queries, the company said in a statement.

MySQL has won a devoted following among the open-source crowd, and is being bolstered with more enterprise-ready capabilities.

Last April at the company's annual conference, it rolled out its road map. A year ago, the company bought Alzato with its clustering technology.
