Appliance Design a Wave of the Future
November 20, 2004 | Levent OZLER
Have any idea what your grandchildren's future kitchen might look like? Some University of Notre Dame students do.
Notre Dame has been recognized worldwide for its scientific research, its humanitarian works, its football program. But in recent years, in unheralded ways, the university has been making a name for itself for its industrial design.
Last year, Notre Dame was among nine institutions -- the only one in North America -- invited to compete in Design Laboratory 2004, an international competition for kitchen and laundry appliance design.
The winner, announced Thursday in New York City, was the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, but as Paul Down said, everyone was a winner and "being invited to compete was a great honor."
Down, the industrial professor representing Notre Dame at the event in New York, said there was much activity around and interest in Notre Dame's design plan.
"This is like the Olympics of design," Down commented.
The other seven participating institutions were Escola Superior de Desenho Industrial, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Design School of Southern Yangtze University, Wuxi, China; Escola Superior de Artes e Design, Lisboa, Portugal; Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Bratislava, Slovakia; Umeå Institute of Design, Umeå, Sweden; Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design, Prague
