Graphic Ideas
January 25, 2005 | Levent OZLER
We're bombarded with design each day, from cola and detergent bottles to magazines, frozen food, license plates and the posters stapled to a telephone pole. And while good design can communicate an idea in seconds, bad design can turn people off forever.
"As designers, we have an obligation to society," said Leslie Haines, professor and chair of the department of graphic design at Watkins College of Art and Design. "We start talking about the importance of design from day one."
The college's graphic design department sends interns to companies in the Nashville area to learn different approaches to print communication and also works with nonprofit organizations to help them understand the role of design in communicating their image and mission.
Watkins students are also winning top honors at national design award competitions, and they celebrate their 2005 ADDY award entries at Watkins by Design, a juried exhibition of Interior Design and Graphic Design Student work.
The ADDY Awards is one of the world's largest and most prestigious competitions for creative excellence in the advertising industry. Students from the Watkins Interior Design and Graphic Design departments are up for the new "student ADDYs," this year, which will be presented along with the professional awards in Nashville in June.
